Four Signs You Need a New Pool Filter

Your swimming pool’s filter is vital. Without it, you can expect a dirty pool in no time flat. And, while a well-made pool filter can last for years, it will eventually need to be replaced. The key, though, is knowing when to replace it and getting the job done ASAP. If you don’t, you’re setting yourself and your pool up for trouble!

Warning Sign #1: Green Water

Has your once-clear pool water gone green? If so, a few things could be to blame. It may be that you have been neglecting to maintain adequate chlorine levels. Or, perhaps your pool has experienced an algae bloom. When these issues aren’t at fault, your filter could be. If you’re doing everything right and still can’t keep green water at bay, it’s likely time for a new filter.

Warning Sign #2: Leaks

Cartridge filters are held together by a device known as a clamp band. Inspect this band from time to time to make sure it’s still working effectively. If you notice leaks from the band, take it as a sign of trouble. More often than not, leaks in this area mean you need a new filter.

Warning Sign #3: Constant Cleaning

As a responsible pool owner, you should be cleaning your filter regularly and backwashing as needed. If you find, though, that you have to do this more and more often or that your cleaning efforts don’t yield the same results they used to, a new filter may be in order.

Warning Sign #4: Strange Sounds

Your filtration system should be relatively quiet when running. Any new or strange sounds that develop are definitely cause for concern. Often, they indicate a problem with the filter’s motor. For best results, don’t continue running the filter until you can have it looked at by professionals and/or replaced.

Remember, as wonderful as pool ownership is, it does come with responsibility. And, one of those responsibilities is replacing pool components as needed, including the filter. Thus, if you notice these or other issues with your filter, don’t ignore them. Step up, be responsible, and take care of the problem, for your pool’s sake and for yours.
